Nature's gifts for Mother's Day

Look what I found in the garden today!

The tiniest chameleon baby (only about 2.5 mm in size), out there in the big wide world, all on its own, no Mother to be seen.

Had it not been discovered by me, it would have made a tasty hors d' oeuvre for a small bird.

I snapped off a twig and brought it indoors for my husband to photograph using his macro lens.
Yes, yes...I know! I'm supposed to be using the lens on my camera and taking my own pictures...but, with the puppies all around my feet, it really isn't an easy feat!
I'm fairly certain a large fly would look less like a potential meal than something to provoke fear for this little baby!

It obviously knew my husband was eyeing it up close!

It's going to have to catch a lot of flies before it grows up into anything remotely fearful. In African folklore, the chameleon is believed to possess magical powers and is both feared and revered by many African people.

The next gift Nature provided right on time for Mother's Day is this beautiful Christmas cactus (Zygocactus), which I'd bought from a nursery many years ago. I put it in its pot in the garden and over the years, the ivy has hidden it well, but every year, I'm  reminded of its existence when it suddenly bursts into bloom.

I asked my husband to nip out into the garden to photograph it for me after he'd photographed the chameleon, as I fear the boisterous romping of the pups is going to knock these gorgeous blossoms off any day now.

Isn't it beautiful?

  2. Your husband isn't a professional photographer by any chance, is he?? Stunning photos, and he must be very patient to take all these marvellous photos for you! Wow! That Christmas Cactus is bright - must be a wonderful sight though. I'm so glad you bought the chamelion indoors and when he goes back outside, I hope he doesn't get eaten!! Have you checked out our friend Carol's blog today. She's over there talking dirty again!!!

  5. When I saw the first photo I thought "an ostrich?" but I see your visitor is a lot tinier than that. That is a very lovely chameleon, clinging to its twig and looking around carefully. Too bad its mom was nowhere in sight.

The flower is gorgeous! Again, your husband took very good photos. With a lot of concrete and asphalt here, it's nice to have such virtual nature's eye candy.

And oh, happy mother's day! Ours exactly was two months ago actually.

  10. O yes! hang onto that chameleon - I suspect he will devour a lot of the bad bugs in your garden. That Christmas cactus is very pretty - I think those of us that live in the southern hemisphere should name it something else - don't you?

  15. I thought ostrich when I saw the first photo, too.

What a beautiful fellow. Are you going to keep him indoors for a while to stop the birds eating him? I wouldn't know how to begin to look after a chameleon. Research required!

The Christmas cactus is lovely, so dramatic and bright and fragile apparently, like the 'china' that your 'bulls' charge around!

  26. EVERYONE:

Thank you all so much for your wonderful comments...my apologies for not being able to make it to each of you personally this week, as we have a team of workmen doing some paving and with five dogs to chaperone, it's a full time job. By the time bedtime arrives after a day of activity outdoors, confined to our garage area, I'm only interested in having my bath and falling into a deep slumber tucked under the duvet on my comfy bed :)

I hope you're all keeping well and enjoying your spring sunshine for those in the Northern hemisphere and the balmy autumn days for those of you who live in the Southern hemisphere. I'll be back to visit each of you on your blogs as soon as time permits.

    Big hug,
    Des xoxo

  27. What gorgeous pictures! I love your little chameleon, and hope you're able to tend to him until he's big enough to make it on his own.

I visited your blog today on a recommendation from Odie, whose blog I also visited for the first time today. (So many blogs, so little time!)

    Take care.

  28. Came by on the advice of your blog friend Odie, and I am so glad I did. If that isn't the cutest Chameleon I have ever seen, I don't know what is. How lucky you are that you live in a place where beautiful creatures like that live in your garden! - G

  29. Hi Desiree, Great shots of the baby chameleon. It is interesting to know that they were believed to have magical powers. The cactus is also lovely. I especially like the closeup shot that shows the flower centre- it looks iridescent.

  30. Desiree,
    First, awesome photos, truly amazing.

Second, I don't have your e-mail address so this is my only way of thanking you for all of your very kind comments on my blog. Your most recent almost made me cry (I did say "almost!") Very much appreciated, you are way too good to me, thanks so much for your blogging friendship. :)

  32. What a glorious Mothers' Day you had!

If you hubby is anything like mine, I'm sure he was thrilled to have a chance to show off his skills with a macro lens. :-) The pictures are incredible.

  33. I completely missed this post before. The "baby" was quite a good find! It's impressive that you saw it at all. I had no idea that they were considered magical or mystical. I think I'll have to look that up for myself to see the rest of it.

And of course, your flowers are awesome as always.
